{"id":72918,"date":"2026-02-19T18:48:57","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T23:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/?p=72918"},"modified":"2026-02-19T18:49:03","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T23:49:03","slug":"two-projects-at-u-m-sparrow-to-expand-psychiatric-health-services-surgery-beds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/two-projects-at-u-m-sparrow-to-expand-psychiatric-health-services-surgery-beds\/","title":{"rendered":"Two projects at U-M Sparrow to expand psychiatric health services, surgery beds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A new hospital at UM-Sparrow in Lansing will soon offer mental health services to children and adolescents that are currently unavailable<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A freestanding surgical center will also be built&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Groundbreaking is expected this summer with opening anticipated in 2028<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Hospital plans to build a behavioral health hospital on its campus in Lansing that will, for the first time, offer child and adolescent care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U-M Board of Regents voted Thursday to approve the project, along with a freestanding surgical center, which together will cost nearly $150 million.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are among the first projects at Sparrow since U-M took over in <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/u-m-health-sparrow-officially-join-to-deliver-health-care\/\">2023<\/a> and committed to invest $800 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese investments would continue our commitment to improving access to care across the state, particularly for those who are most vulnerable,\u201d David C. Miller, CEO of Michigan Medicine, said during the regents meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<figure class='wp-block-newspack-blocks-iframe'>\n\t\t<div class='wp-block-embed__wrapper' style=\"height:600px; offer psychiatric care serving geriatric and adult populations and also include programs for adolescents and<strong> <\/strong>an outpatient service known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodrx.com\/health-topic\/mental-health\/partial-hospitalization-program?srsltid=AfmBOoqQLfxGFwndSbKN_GRsylqpHM199utaQBHpCksrqloHK6oXd-xd\">partial hospitalization<\/a>, which the about future<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor many years, decades really, there\u2019s been a desert of care especially in terms of the inpatient setting for pediatric care,\u201d Victor Hong, UM clinical associate professor of psychiatry, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wbkEO-QvwCw\">a video released <\/a>after approval by the regents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis new hospital will enhance the care in the region, add 16 new beds for pediatric patients whereas before the closest inpatient bed for a child was about an hour away from Lansing.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will replace the hospital\u2019s facility that is currently located on the St. Lawrence campus, with a building in a park-like setting behind the main hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The $60 million freestanding surgical facility is meant to ease capacity of the main hospital\u2019s 22 operating rooms, opening initially with four operating rooms and potentially expanding with two more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur communities deserve the level of care that is associated with U-M Health, and both of these projects address unmet needs, including the scarcity of behavioral health services in the region,\u201d Margaret Dimond, Regional President, U-M Health, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Groundbreaking for both facilities is expected this summer with anticipated opening in 2028, Miller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U-M Regent Sarah Hubbard read a letter during the meeting from Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Tim Daman, who said the projects would have a \u201cprofound and positive impact on public health, workforce stability and regional economic growth in Michigan\u2019s capital city.\u201dInvestments to UM-Health Sparrow have also been made for a <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/u-m-health-plans-32m-health-care-center-in-grand-ledge\/\">new $32 million clinic in Grand Ledge <\/a>that officials said is expected to open by the end of the year, and a $28 million <a href=\"https:\/\/record.umich.edu\/articles\/um-health-sparrow-meeting-needs-for-patient-care-in-rural-ionia\/\">ambulatory clinic
