(Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It said, in part, that \u201cMott Community College affirms the constitutional right to freedom of religion and respects the deeply held beliefs of all individuals. The ability to practice and express one\u2019s faith freely is a fundamental liberty and an important part of the democratic society and Mott itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a public institution, the college also has a responsibility to maintain an environment that is inclusive and welcoming to people of all faiths and those with no religious affiliations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three trustees called the special board meeting after Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a national nonprofit, notified Richardson-Snell and board members that the group had received a complaint that Richardson-Snell had made \u201cproselytizing religious comments\u201d on several occasions. (Kim Kozlowski\/Bridge Michigan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Board attorney Carey DeWitt said that he was asked by the board chair to investigate the complaints about Richardson-Snell after they emerged during an October meeting and were resolved in December \u2014 before they reached the Americans United for Separation of Church and State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked after the meeting what the resolution was, DeWitt declined to say, calling it \u201cprivileged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 75 community and faculty members attended Wednesday&#8217;s special board meeting. Richardson-Snell did not attend the meeting. In divided land, not all are thrilled<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/michigan-state-university-provost-teresa-woodruff-named-interim-president\/\"><strong>Michigan State University Provost Teresa Woodruff named interim president<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Among the people to whom Richardson-Snell reportedly spoke about her faith in her official capacity is Wayne Wilson, a member of the Navajo Nation (Din\u00e9) in Arizona, who told Bridge Michigan last month that she asked him if he \u201chad accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal savior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilson said the president spoke with him after he spoke during the annual Peace and Dignity Ceremony, held annually on Indigenous Peoples Day in October to promote cultural unity through indigenous traditions, and mentioned living previously in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/dup\/inline-files\/bsi_investigative_report_may_2022_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal Indian boarding school<\/a> run by Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Speakers weigh in<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s meeting drew comments in support of and against Richardson-Snell&#8217;s reported comments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mott Community College February 18th, 2025 Board of Trustees Special Meeting\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yLGYnstJ-Z0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have the freedom to express our religion in the United States of America,\u201d said Lou Penton, a Flint community member. \u201cPeople have died for that freedom. They\u2019ve given their lives for it \u2026 I believe that the president of this institution was exercising her constitutional rights to express her religious views.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Freeman, a former Mott college board member, said the issue is not about freedom of religion or speech. Rather, the college is a public institution and is bound by the Constitution\u2019s First Amendment establishment clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMultiple complaints have been raised alleging that actions taken by President Shaunda Richardson-Snell violated that constitutional boundary,\u201d Freeman said. \u201cThe issue before you is whether the leadership of this publicly-funded college has crossed that constitutional line \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diana Van der Vossen, a resident of Davison, said the college \u201cdeserves leadership that is appointed through a process that is transparent, lawful and beyond reproach \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allegations involving the college president raise \u201cserious concerns as a public institution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMott Community College must remain a place that is inclusive, respectful and free from the promotion of any individual religious viewpoint,\u201d Van der Vossen said. \u201cThis is not about personal beliefs. It\u2019s about professional responsibility, institutional neutrality and adherence to the standards expected of public leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Miosha Robinson, a Flint resident who leads a nondenominational church in the community with her husband, said what Richardson-Snell reportedly said is \u201can expression of who she is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no way that she could go through life and not share her faith,\u201d said Robinson, who wore a sweatshirt with the word, \u201cPray.\u201d \u201cIt is who she is. (Screenshots)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Former board member Anne Figueroa said she did not understand why the previous board chair allowed Richardson-Snell to recite the Lord\u2019s Prayer after the Pledge of Allegiance during public board meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a public institution and should, therefore, be inclusive to all,\u201d said Figueroa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The president is also in a position of power, which is different from an average person speaking about their faith, Figueroa added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe makes these statements to her staff and the faculty and students and they begin to wonder: what\u2019s the repercussions if I don\u2019t agree with her?,\u201d Figueroa said. \u201cThose in power can\u2019t use the power to their own benefit. It\u2019s not a pulpit. It\u2019s a job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley Shafer, a Davison resident and former Mott college student, said she objected to the portrayal of Richardson-Snell\u2019s words as \u201cproselytizing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProselytizing involves coercion and often comes with force or aggression,\u201d said Shafer. \u201cAsking if somebody knows Jesus as their Lord and Savior is not coercive in nature.
