Across the region, more than 1,900 people lost their jobs to layoffs or plant closures last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodtv.com\/news\/michigan\/w-mi-saw-most-layoffs-since-pandemic-in-2025-as-statewide-numbers-decreased\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawP8amRleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFvamR6U3ZJVU9CbjBEVlR3c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHkuKmAj9WEhbUbWGWg87i37z89787Fwh4etXSWV8RKr-XtZPRn_SVT_z1g0S_aem_d1R4ebVQGFUtimCiSylxXw\">according to a tracking by WOOD TV<\/a>. It just needs the jobs<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/silver-tsunami-of-retiring-business-owners-leaves-main-streets-at-a-crossroads\/\"><strong>\u2018Silver tsunami\u2019 of retiring business owners leaves Main Streets at a crossroads<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The lackluster forecast comesas west Michigan\u2019s main economic development agency, The Right Place, on Thursday launched <a href=\"https:\/\/online.flippingbook.com\/view\/367448487\/\">a three-year plan<\/a> in hopes of growing jobs in AI, data centers, aerospace and medical device manufacturing, among other industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The economy is shaping up as a key issue in Michigan\u2019s 2026 campaigns for governor, US Senate and other seats. Nearly 1 in 10 of more than 2,000 respondents to <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/bridge-michigan-is-listening-what-issues-matter-most-to-you-in-2026-election\/\">Bridge Listens<\/a>, our unscientific survey of Michiganders\u2019 leading concerns, named the economy as their prime issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdOHxDcujY5qm-2YMk3Th0nXHP0xQwdt4g013IFglK7gPMRKQ\/viewform\">Take the survey<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/bridge-lunch-break-what-issues-matter-most-to-michigan-voters-tickets-1982471064320?utm-campaign=social&amp;utm-content=attendeeshare&amp;utm-medium=discovery&amp;utm-term=listing&amp;utm-source=cp&amp;aff=ebdsshcopyurl\">Register for Bridge Lunch Break virtual discussion on readers\u2019 top issues<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ranked against similar metro areas around the country, the Grand Rapids region slipped in 2024 in population growth and economic output but gained ground in its concentration of tech jobs and overall employment growth, The Right Place said in its strategic plan report released Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/west-michigan-has-tech-hub-dreams-and-buzz-it-just-needs-the-jobs\/\">launched an effort<\/a> to gain 20,000 tech jobs for the Grand Rapids region in 10 years, making tech 10% of the region\u2019s workforce. Headed into the halfway point, the region has added 5,600 tech jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Randy Thelen, president and CEO of The Right Place, acknowledged the obstacles but remained confident the group could meet its goals by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t just happen,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we\u2019re gonna cut through some of the headwinds, it\u2019s gonna take a lot of work, a lot of hustle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnston agreed in a separate interview, saying the region can \u201chave an impact on controlling our own destiny\u201d if it can create a talent pipeline and build enough housing for workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can still attract that workforce that we need and grow our population,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greater Grand Rapids added 6,000 housing units between 2022 and 2024 but will be short nearly 40,000 units by 2030, The Right Place said in its report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Right Place\u2019s report found plenty of optimism, not the least of which is that the economic development company met several goals for west Michigan outlined in its 2023 to 2025 plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among others, it added or retained a net 4,153 jobs when it hoped to add or retain 4,000, and it helped bring the average hourly wage for the region to $30.90 when it aimed for $26.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next three years, it hopes to add or retain a net 4,500 jobs and attract $700 million in capital investment and $200 million in community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm hopes to accomplish those goals by working to bring investment in manufacturing, health sciences and tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Don\u2019t wanna be caught unprepared\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the risks of AI, the firm hopes to bring the region new investments in tech \u2014 including data centers and companies working in aerospace, defense, food processing and advanced manufacturing \u2014 and help existing firms adopt new technologies, including artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be caught unprepared while other regions advance\u201d in tech, Thelen said. \u201cTo keep that diversified portfolio, we need to grow tech as part of that portfolio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm plans to partner with Grand Valley State University, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodtv.com\/news\/grand-rapids\/gvsu-building-166-million-tech-hub-in-grand-rapids\/?email=4d8c1875fc76a95bec92dfcdc693a9bdac302640&amp;emaila=ce9cdbcb61fd03e03330bf7b2da102a6&amp;emailb=722095910296435371a09342e315936e9d5d9a91fae3255108d51a83e4a8999f&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Curated%20Daily%20News%202026-02-13&amp;utm_content=wood%20tv%20daily%20news\">investing $166 million<\/a> into building a new tech hub in Grand Rapids by 2028, and other universities to help build a talent pipeline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last three years, The Right Place has conducted 130 assessments of west Michigan manufacturers to gauge their readiness for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/business\/solutions\/industry\/manufacturing\/smart-manufacturing-and-industry-4-0\/?cmp=2025:05:ge:us::ns:pre:pse:goo::ao:8888855284:_ds_cid_19652474117_ds_agid_149529643167&amp;utm_term=manufacturing%204.0&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=GGL_NB_Industry+4.0_Exact&amp;utm_content=Enterprise&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=19652474117&amp;gbraid=0AAAAABymyREUaQ35KyODAZFyQo5BjPGpI&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAtLvMBhB_EiwA1u6_PurKiCZeRdYqVWQxJgApkknTLbbsFGEY6RpePg0i2xcS3AA2lyYh2RoCNc8QAvD_BwE\">Industry 4.0<\/a>, a roadmap for automation and AI integration to modernize factories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm plans to expand those assessments over the next three years and help manufacturers adopt more tech into their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm plans to grow membership in MiDevice, a consortium of Michigan-based medical device manufacturers, and seek to bring new medical device manufacturers to town and encourage new startups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm also aims to increase internship programs, help the Grand Rapids airport add new nonstop destinations, and work with local governments to invest in outdoor recreation in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Artificial intelligence is leading to job losses.
