{"id":72526,"date":"2026-02-09T19:51:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T00:51:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/?p=72526"},"modified":"2026-02-10T12:03:01","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T17:03:01","slug":"trump-threatens-to-block-michigan-canada-bridge-in-trade-war-escalation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/trump-threatens-to-block-michigan-canada-bridge-in-trade-war-escalation\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump threatens to block Michigan-Canada bridge in trade war escalation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>President Donald Trump threatens to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge late Monday<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The bridge was fully paid for by Canada, though Michigan is a partial owner, and is expected to open sometime in early 2026<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trump, in a statement, said the bridge would only open once the US is &#8216;fully compensated for everything&#8217; it has given Canada<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>LANSING \u2014 President Donald Trump is threatening to block a new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, saying he will not allow the international crossing to open until the US is \u201cfully compensated for everything we have given\u201d Canada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gordie Howe International Bridge has been <a href=\"https:\/\/gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com\/project\/our-story\/\">under construction since 2018<\/a> but is slated to open <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/quality-life\/gordie-howe-bridge-to-give-michigan-a-walkable-bikeable-link-to-canada\/\">later this year<\/a>. Canada is paying all upfront costs for the bridge, which will be jointly owned with Michigan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a late Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116043090074364624\">social media post<\/a>, Trump argued that Canada is taking \u201cadvantage of\u201d the US and should treat the US with the \u201cFairness and Respect that we deserve.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not clear how Trump would try to block the bridge, but the threat is the latest escalation of Trump&#8217;s trade war with Canada, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/trump-plans-35-tariffs-canada-michigans-biggest-trade-partner\/\">Michigan&#8217;s largest international trade partner<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump last year imposed tariffs on Canada, prompting the country to pursue alternative trade deals with China. Yes, less than half a percent<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In his Monday night post, Trump argued the US should own \u201cperhaps, at least one half of\u201d the bridge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cWe will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A request for comment was left with the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blocking the bridge\u2019s opening would have \u201cserious repercussions\u201d for Michigan and would be \u201cawful for our state\u2019s economy,\u201d US Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, said in a Monday night statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith this threat, the president is punishing Michiganders for a trade war he started,\u201d Slotkin added. \u201cThe only reason Canada is on the verge of a trade deal with China is because President Trump has kicked them in the teeth for a year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the Bridge was built by union workers from both sides of the border and would benefit the state&#8217;s auto industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This project has been a tremendous example of bipartisan and international cooperation,&#8221; Whitmer said. &#8220;It&#8217;s going to open one way or another, and the governor looks forward to attending the ribbon cutting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada and Michigan agreed to construct the bridge in 2012 under an agreement sought by then-Gov. Rick Snyder, who said at the time that building a second international span was important for the state&#8217;s economic future and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/formergovernors\/recent\/snyder\/press-releases\/2012\/06\/15\/new-international-trade-crossing-agreement-to-bring-jobs-economic-security-easier-travel\">a great illustration of the power of partnerships<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of its agreement to cover all construction costs, Canada has been repaying Michigan for related expenses. It reimbursed the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdot\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/MDOT\/About-Us\/Governmental-Affairs\/Legislative-Reports\/FY-2026\/Section-385-PA-119-GHIB-Monthly-Report-December-2025.pdf\">more than $54 million<\/a> last year alone, primarily for land acquisition, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gordie Howe International Bridge is slated to join the Ambassador Bridge as the second international span in Detroit.
