That reduces a Michigan student\u2019s tuition cost on average by 47%, Hurley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright is-layout-grid wp-container-core-group-is-layout-9649a0d9 wp-block-group-is-layout-grid\">\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"4c6ecbf4-c8e4-4be8-97f4-bbfac285c8ee\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"Michigan university tuitions have increased on average 44% in the last decade\"><\/div><script>!function(e,n,i,s){var d=\"InfogramEmbeds\";var o=e.getElementsByTagName(n)[0];if(window[d]&&window[d].initialized)window[d].process&&window[d].process();else if(!e.getElementById(i)){var r=e.createElement(n);r.async=1,r.id=i,r.src=s,o.parentNode.insertBefore(r,o)}}(document,\"script\",\"infogram-async\",\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\");<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Many students and families overestimate the cost of college, Hurley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a perception issue, but it\u2019s also concerning because it\u2019s certain headlines and certain exposure that can scare young adults off from going to college because they think it costs too much,\u201d Hurley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a student fills out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, form, they qualify for financial aid: upward of <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/articles\/dont-miss-out-on-pell-grants\/\">$7,395 <\/a>from a Federal Pell Grant; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mistudentaid\/programs\/michigan-achievement-scholarship?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=gud-annual-misa-search&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23273385003&amp;gbraid=0AAAAApWLINmpGPVYFI_6ZQdjkPIdWbZuy&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAqKbMBhBmEiwAZ3UboMnvyQSCcv3Rlxo1BLVJZ7o7Ac1QsusP_bwdHVgutiFE7dEUaouUxhoCKTwQAvD_BwE\">up to $27,500 <\/a>over five years from the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and more from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mistudentaid\/programs\">several other state-funded grants and scholarships<\/a>, which totaled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mistudentaid\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/mistudentaid\/Annual-Reports\/Annual-Report-2024.pdf\">$375.4 million in 2023-24<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michigan\u2019s 15 public universities also contribute over $1 billion annually to students in financial aid, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masu.org\/student-success\/financial-aid\/free-tuition-programs\">free tuition programs <\/a>at the state\u2019s 15 public universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you factor that all in, that net price of attendance continues to decline,\u201d Hurley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright is-layout-grid wp-container-core-group-is-layout-9649a0d9 wp-block-group-is-layout-grid\">\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"95da8265-0b0a-49b3-8f40-8968f686b5b0\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-title=\"Tuition at Michigan public universities is up more than $5K in last decade\"><\/div><script>!function(e,n,i,s){var d=\"InfogramEmbeds\";var o=e.getElementsByTagName(n)[0];if(window[d]&&window[d].initialized)window[d].process&&window[d].process();else if(!e.getElementById(i)){var r=e.createElement(n);r.async=1,r.id=i,r.src=s,o.parentNode.insertBefore(r,o)}}(document,\"script\",\"infogram-async\",\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\");<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Public university tuition in Michigan has increased over the last 10 years by about 44% on average. But the net price of college as a percentage of household income has been decreasing, according to research by the Michigan Association of State Universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hurley attributes the decline in recent years to the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, a flagship program created in 2022 for recent high school graduates that began initially with $250 million and grew to nearly $1.2 billion over three budget cycles to assist tens of thousands of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Promise scholarships, available in <a href=\"https:\/\/promisezonesmi.com\/promise-zone-map\/\">more than a dozen communities<\/a>, also help students reduce tuition cost, added Sen. Sarah Anthony, D-Lansing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe still know that college is worth it, whether you are looking for a two-year degree, four-year degree or skilled trade, but we need more folks who are trained,\u201d said Anthony, who previously served as deputy director of the Michigan College Access Network. \u201cSo we have been trying to work on policies that lower barriers for kids, and affordability is something we have done a pretty good job on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State funding used to account for most of the cost of public university operations but that has since flipped, Hurley said.
