It also will provide a continuum of behavioral health care that will include partial-day and outpatient mental health programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, mental health advocates have lamented a lack of inpatient services throughout Michigan. In announcing the plans, officials noted that more than 3.6 million Michiganders live in a community without enough mental health professionals, according to the <a expansion<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the need to \u201cintensify\u201d behavioral health care, the Madison Heights hospital \u2014 despite its busy emergency department \u2014 had been operating at a \u201cmoderate to low\u201d volume, said Denise Brooks-Williams, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Detroit-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.henryford.com\/about\">Henry Ford Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement is good news for a state in need of more mental health services, said Bob Sheehan, chief executive officer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cmham.org\/about\/annual-report\/\">Community Mental Health Association of Michigan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it operates with 100 beds, he said, the still-unnamed hospital will be \u201cby far\u201d one of the largest providers in the state, he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, \u201cit takes expertise to run a psychiatric hospital, and (Trillium) brings that to the table,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henry Ford will begin to take beds offline in late March, and renovations by Trillium are expected to take about a year, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Henry Ford won\u2019t completely vacate the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather, it will continue to operate the hospital\u2019s 24-hour emergency department, staffing it with Henry Ford physicians, nurses and other medical providers and leasing the space from Trillium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks-Williams called the venture a \u201cpartnership\u201d even though the hospital and emergency room will operate independently of each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;ll be another access point for us to be able to provide care,\u201d she said, referring to Henry Ford patients who need behavioral health services<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility\u2019s inpatient and surgical services shift to Henry Ford\u2019s Warren Hospital, about five miles away, and non-emergency Madison Heights hospital staff will be able transfer to other Henry Ford Health locations, Brooks-Williams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a significant intent to ensure that employees are placed within our large-footprint health system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement is pending regulatory approvals, including the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mha.org\/issues-advocacy\/regulatory-issues\/certificate-of-need-regulations\/\">certificate-of-need<\/a> process, Brooks-Williams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Detroit-based Henry Ford Health significantly expanded its footprint in 2024 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/henry-ford-health-expands-footprint-adds-eight-ascension-hospital-campuses\/\">acquisition<\/a> of eight Ascension hospitals, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DOeZQ_wErJD\/\">construction continues<\/a> on a $3 billion expansion of its downtown campus \u2014 a \u201chospital for the next 100 years\u201d it has been called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning over the Madison Heights site to Trillium leaves Henry Ford with a dozen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/locations\">acute care hospitals<\/a>, in addition to three behavioral health hospitals \u2014 the 192-bed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/News\/2025\/01\/henry-ford-behavioral-health-hospital-opens\">Henry Ford Behavioral Hospital <\/a>which opened early last year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/locations\/brighton-center-for-recovery\">Henry Ford Brighton Center for Recovery<\/a>, which it acquired in the Ascension deal, and
