Two hunting and trapping advocacy groups <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-environment-watch\/groups-sue-michigan-wildlife-regulators-over-shorter-coyote-hunting\/?_gl=1*1acjlvs*_gcl_au*MTYwNDUzMjkzNi4xNzcwMDUxMTY1*_ga*MjcyODgzNDcwLjE3MzgwNzk1ODc.*_ga_SDMLQHFB10*czE3NzAxNDgyOTEkbzE4OSRnMSR0MTc3MDE0ODM4MyRqMzYkbDAkaDA.*_ga_1E2G9MSHX5*czE3NzAxNDgyOTEkbzE5NSRnMSR0MTc3MDE0ODMxNSRqMzYkbDAkaDA.*_ga_KX5CRZVP9F*czE3NzAxNDgyOTEkbzE5MyRnMSR0MTc3MDE0ODMxNSRqMzYkbDAkaDA.\">filed lawsuits<\/a> saying the Natural Resources Commission\u2019s decision was in response to social pressure and not based on science. An Ingham County Circuit Court judge <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/outdoors-life\/michigans-shortened-coyote-hunting-season-stands-judge-rules\/\">ruled on that suit in June<\/a>, saying that the commission\u2019s decision to shorten the season had been legally sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its last meeting on Jan. 14, the Natural Resources Commission passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/dnr\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/dnr\/Documents\/Boards\/NRC\/2026\/January-2026\/Signed_10WCO2025_FORACTION_FINAL_edited.pdf\">an amendment<\/a> that shortened the coyote hunting and trapping season but created a new \u201cmanagement season,\u201d the first of its kind, to allow coyotes to be killed on public or private lands for any reason.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that coyotes can cause problems,\u201d Natural Resources Commission Chair Becky Humphries told Bridge Michigan after the vote. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to free up the reins and provide that opportunity and yet still be respectful of the resource and the users out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b\u200bCoyotes could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/dnr\/managing-resources\/wildlife\/nuisance-wildlife\/nuisance-coyote-faq\">already be killed on private property<\/a> year-round if they threatened or damaged livestock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new coyote management season is slated to run from March 2 to Oct. 14 and the new hunting and trapping season will run from Oct. 15 to March 1, together encompassing a year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Timeline of events<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2016:<\/strong> In an attempt to better control coyotes, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission voted to extend the hunting season for the animals from nine months to year-round.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 14, 2024: <\/strong>The NRC voted to ban coyote hunting between April 16 and July 14, decreasing the season by three months.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>March 2024:<\/strong> Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers filed lawsuits against the NRC for making a decision they said was not based on science.
