{"id":72027,"date":"2026-01-28T16:01:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T21:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/?p=72027"},"modified":"2026-01-28T16:01:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T21:01:44","slug":"bridge-lunch-break-recap-experts-call-for-tougher-nursing-home-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/center-michigan\/bridge-lunch-break-recap-experts-call-for-tougher-nursing-home-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridge Lunch Break recap: Experts call for tougher nursing home regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bridge Michigan\u2019s Lunch Break series resumed Wednesday for a conversation about nursing homes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The event followed a Bridge investigation that revealed thousands of cases of abuse, neglect and death in state homes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Two advocates called for policy changes\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Policymakers need to act to end everyday misery that is pervasive in some Michigan nursing homes, two experts said during a Bridge Michigan virtual discussion on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s 34,000-plus nursing home residents need \u201cthe kind of decisions, the quality, the dignity that they deserve, and that they&#8217;ve deserved throughout their entire life, said Paula Cunningham, state director of AARP Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cunningham was one of two panelists Wednesday in the latest in the Bridge Michigan Lunch Break series, which was moderated by senior health reporter Robin Erb.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hour-long discussion followed a Bridge&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/abuse-neglect-common-in-michigan-nursing-homes-and-no-one-is-coming-to-help\/\">investigation<\/a> that documented nearly 6,000 cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-42\/chapter-IV\/subchapter-G\/part-483\/subpart-B\/section-483.12\">abuse, neglect, exploitation<\/a> or quality of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-42\/chapter-IV\/subchapter-G\/part-483\/subpart-B\/section-483.24\">life<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-42\/chapter-IV\/subchapter-G\/part-483\/subpart-B\/section-483.25\">care<\/a> violations and nearly three dozen deaths in about four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 100 readers participated in the conversation, which can be watched in its entirety here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The state of Michigan&#039;s nursing homes | Bridge Michigan Lunch Break\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iwhUGyUCYjI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing a Bridge story about <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/install-cameras-beef-up-training-and-5-other-ways-to-fix-michigan-nursing-homes\/\">efforts elsewhere <\/a>to improve care, consumer advocate Alison Hirschel said Michigan lawmakers must address staffing and training in nursing homes and require homes be more transparent about how they spend the some $3 billion they receive from the federal government each year for care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/abuse-neglect-common-in-michigan-nursing-homes-and-no-one-is-coming-to-help\/\"><strong>Abuse, neglect common in Michigan nursing homes \u2014 and no one is coming to help<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/michigan-has-35m-fund-to-improve-nursing-homes-not-worth-applying-some-say\/\"><strong>Michigan sits on $35M fund to improve nursing homes. Lawmakers passed legislation to do so in 2021, but the measure failed when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/public-interest\/2021\/01\/no-surveillance-cameras-in-nursing-home-rooms-after-whitmer-pocket-veto.html\">failed to sign<\/a> it into law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPut the cameras in there, so if there&#8217;s an issue, we can all see that,\u201d Cunningham said. \u201cDo you realize how many people then would see someone who had fallen, or didn&#8217;t get their meds, or were in pain, if the cameras were there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michigan needs rules to prevent problem providers from setting up businesses, said Hirschel, program director and managing attorney of the Michigan Elder Justice Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe shouldn&#8217;t let them come and make money here if they&#8217;re not going to take good care of Michiganders living in their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bridge\u2019s series also explored the industry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/michigan-nursing-homes-have-few-staff-little-training-misery-can-follow\/\">struggle<\/a> to hire and retain staff and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/michigan-has-35m-fund-to-improve-nursing-homes-not-worth-applying-some-say\/\">red tape<\/a> around a $35 million fund designed to improve quality of life.
