About 20 of 90 readers expressed support for the crackdown or identified illegal crossings as a top issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdOHxDcujY5qm-2YMk3Th0nXHP0xQwdt4g013IFglK7gPMRKQ\/viewform\">Take the issues survey<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/bridge-michigan-is-listening-what-issues-matter-most-to-you-in-2026-election\/\">Bridge launches yearlong listening, accountability effort<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what we know about deportation and detainment efforts in Michigan, and various policy changes that lawmakers and the state Supreme Court are already considering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ICE arrests, detention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigration stops and arrests have steadily increased in Michigan during President Donald Trump\u2019s second term, but they haven\u2019t yet escalated to the level of enforcement and violent encounters seen in Minneapolis and other US cities, according to arrest data and immigrant advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICE arrested 2,349 people in Michigan from January through October 2025, nearly triple the number arrested in the state in the same timeframe in 2024, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement data provided to the Deportation Data Project through Freedom of Information Act requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright is-layout-grid wp-container-core-group-is-layout-9649a0d9 wp-block-group-is-layout-grid\">\n<div style=\"position: relative; width: 100%; height: 0px; padding: 135.5% 0px 0px; overflow: hidden; will-change: transform;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/72eadec3-72e2-403b-9378-3b7a00747236?src=embed&amp;embed_type=responsive_iframe\" title=\"Immigration detainees most serious charges\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"fullscreen\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>ICE had detained 3,338 people in Michigan \u2014 most of them at the North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, which reopened as a detention center in June 2025 \u2014 last year through October, nearly triple the number detained in the same timeframe in 2024. Most came from Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Baldwin facility has a capacity of 1,800 and is considered the largest detention facility in the Midwest. Since July 2025, ICE detention data shows the capacity has steadily increased. As of early January, the facility housed a daily average of 1,391 detainees \u2013 the ninth largest population among all ICE facilities nationally, according to federal reports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Few criminal convictions in ICE arrests<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration had vowed to begin deportation efforts by focusing on violent or dangerous criminals, but ICE arrest and detainment records show a much wider reach in Michigan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some migrants detained<strong> <\/strong>in Michigan last year were charged with serious crimes, including murder (six people), sexual assault (26 people), and assault (59 people). But most of those more than 3,000 detainees had no criminal record when they were booked, according to the data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright is-layout-grid wp-container-core-group-is-layout-9649a0d9 wp-block-group-is-layout-grid\">\n<div style=\"position: relative; width: 100%; height: 0px; padding: 155.04% 0px 0px; overflow: hidden; will-change: transform;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/b11b65a3-73e4-40e3-88c7-8900db3a5045?src=embed&amp;embed_type=responsive_iframe\" title=\"Immigration detention charges\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"fullscreen\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those who had a criminal record, immigration-related crimes such as overstayed visas were the most common offenses, according to the data. The most common non-immigration crime was drunk driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics say that points to a haphazard approach by the Trump administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we have heard consistently from most Americans is that they say they want an immigration system that is fair, that is orderly and humane,\u201d said Sauve of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center. \u201cInstead, under this administration, we are seeing the exact opposite. (Adam Gray\/Associated Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump was elected after vowing a major deportation effort, and &#8220;there are still hundreds of thousands to deport from the interior of our country,&#8221; Leavitt added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The president is fulfilling the will of the people by arresting and removing these threats from our country in cities from Los Angeles to New York and yes, Minneapolis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018There\u2019s always a risk\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anecdotally, immigrant advocates across Michigan say they have noticed an uptick in detentions and have responded with increased volunteer response, training and observation of ICE activity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In west Michigan, the group GR Rapid Response to ICE has been monitoring immigration enforcement in the region since 2017.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignright is-layout-grid wp-container-core-group-is-layout-9649a0d9 wp-block-group-is-layout-grid\">\n<div style=\"position: relative; width: 100%; height: 0px; padding: 135.5% 0px 0px; overflow: hidden; will-change: transform;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/1be6ab0b-6854-4131-a858-1f92410a6d23?src=embed&amp;embed_type=responsive_iframe\" title=\"Immigration detainees country of origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"fullscreen\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent months, the group and partner organization Movimiento Cosecha have noticed an increase in requests to assist immigrants and their families in the area, ranging from financial support to direct assistance with housing or obtaining resources, group member Jeff Smith told Bridge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith said their group has always made it a priority to train volunteers and warn them of the risks that come with observing and documenting ICE activity, whether it\u2019s arrests, physical harm or even death.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he noted that the anxieties many are feeling in the aftermath of the deaths in Minneapolis are a fraction of what immigrant communities are dealing with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the reality that immigrants face all the time,\u201d he said. \u201cWe always emphasize that this is what it means to be in solidarity with people who are the primary targets of ICE. There\u2019s always a risk.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calls to block funding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite bitterly cold temperatures, protests emerged in a handful of Michigan communities this weekend following Pretti\u2019s death.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the largest was in Traverse City, where an <a href=\"https:\/\/upnorthlive.com\/news\/local\/traverse-indivisible-organizes-downtown-protest-over-federal-immigration-enforcement\">estimated 2,000 people<\/a> gathered downtown for a protest and march led by the grassroots group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traverseindivisible.org\/\">Traverse Indivisible<\/a>. Hundreds also turned out for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wzzm13.com\/video\/news\/local\/protest-against-ice-held-in-grand-rapids\/69-7fd403e3-99b9-4b62-a46b-c8f91c8bacd6\">protest in Grand Rapids<\/a>, with smaller protest groups cropping up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/detroit\/2026\/01\/24\/detroit-protest-minnesota-shooting-freezing-temperatures\/88339643007\/\">Detroit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourmidland.com\/news\/article\/midland-residents-protest-ice-killing-21314844.php\">Midland<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both US Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, and outgoing US Sen. Rashida Tlaib, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/01\/26\/congress\/krist-noem-democrats-00746865\">Debbie Dingell<\/a>, Shri Thanedar and Haley Stevens, all Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Movement in the Michigan Legislature?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats in the Michigan Legislature have already introduced multiple ICE-related bills and could act on several as soon as this week despite likely opposition in the Republican-led state House.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State Sen. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, told Bridge Michigan she plans to hold a Thursday hearing \u2014 and potential vote \u2014 on a package of bills that would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ban officers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2025-2026\/billintroduced\/Senate\/pdf\/2025-SIB-0510.pdf\">wearing masks<\/a> in the line of duty, except if used for health or safety reasons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prohibit any government agency in Michigan from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2025-2026\/billintroduced\/Senate\/pdf\/2025-SIB-0509.pdf\">sharing people&#8217;s personal information<\/a> for the purposes of immigration enforcement unless there is a judicial warrant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bar immigration enforcement officials from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0508\">conducting raids<\/a> on places of worship, schools, hospitals and courthouses without a prior court order or if necessary to address an imminent threat to the public<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a top priority issue for a large number of us \u2026 in the Senate Democratic Caucus, and we\u2019re talking about this issue on a very regular basis,\u201d said Chang, who chairs the Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee the bills are before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, D-Grand Rapids, echoed that sentiment in a statement, saying Senate Democrats are \u201cextremely disturbed by what&#8217;s happening and we are having a robust conversation about how we can best keep Michiganders safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing unfold in Minnesota at the hands of federal officers is sickening and antithetical to both our constitution and values as Americans,\u201d Brinks said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s unlikely the bills would go anywhere in the Republican-led House, however. A spokesperson for Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall has maintained support for ICE activities. He previously vowed that similar legislation from House Democrats also seeking to unmask ICE agents was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/politics\/2025\/07\/bill-to-criminalize-masked-ice-officers-is-dead-on-arrival-michigan-house-speaker-says.html\">dead on arrival<\/a>,\u201d calling the bill \u201cridiculous.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We want to work with ICE,\u201d Hall said in a press conference last week. \u201cWe want to ban the sanctuary cities, so we don&#8217;t have to worry about our state and city funding being in jeopardy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">State courts weigh immigration enforcement ban&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Michigan Supreme Court justices are currently weighing whether to ban civil arrests of people \u201cattending a court proceeding or having legal business\u201d in any of Michigan\u2019s trial or appellate courthouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As written, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.michigan.gov\/4aca16\/siteassets\/rules-instructions-administrative-orders\/proposed-and-recently-adopted-orders-on-admin-matters\/proposed-orders\/2025-14_2025-11-19_formor_propamdmcr8.115.pdf\">proposed rule<\/a> would not interfere with criminal or court-ordered arrest warrants, but would cover most civil immigration arrests by federal law enforcement, which are typically based on administrative warrants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If adopted, the rule would add Michigan to the list of several states attempting to limit immigration arrests following court proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advocates, including Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel, say the threat of civil arrest in courthouses is preventing people from showing up to traffic court, testifying in hearings or performing other functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s causing havoc on untold levels for us,\u201d Nessel <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/dana-nessel-bar-immigration-arrests-at-michigan-courthouses\/\">recently told Bridge<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But many conservatives have decried the proposal, claiming such a change would undermine public safety and the judicial system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter to justices, state Rep.
