{"id":71611,"date":"2026-01-14T16:45:04","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T21:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/?p=71611"},"modified":"2026-01-14T16:45:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T21:45:11","slug":"michigans-buttigieg-i-dont-know-if-presidential-run-will-come-in-2028","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/michigans-buttigieg-i-dont-know-if-presidential-run-will-come-in-2028\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan\u2019s Buttigieg: \u2018I don\u2019t know\u2019 if presidential run will come in 2028"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The former US transportation secretary toured the Detroit Auto Show on Tuesday<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Despite changes in policy, he still expects electric vehicles and automated vehicles to take off<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Buttigieg also said he doesn\u2019t know if he\u2019ll run for president in 2028<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>DETROIT \u2014&nbsp;Prominent Michigander, Biden-era transportation secretary and potential presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg offered little insight into his plans for 2028 during an interview at the Detroit Auto Show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he answered when asked if he planned to run again for president.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question followed Buttigieg\u2019s on-stage conversation with Kevin Guskiewicz, president of Michigan State University, during the media preview days of the international event that highlights Detroit\u2019s signature product and innovation taking place across the auto industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buttigieg\u2019s visit and tour of the show floor came a day after <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/fact-check-donald-trump-touts-economy-downplays-costs-in-michigan-speech\/\">President Donald Trump<\/a> came to Detroit to tout an auto industry that he said is rebounding thanks to his tariff policy and other rulemaking. Yet economists say questions persist about the long-term effects of the changes, which sent the auto industry whipsawing between Biden-era electrification subsidies and Trump\u2019s moves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/michigan-democrats-look-toward-future-some-hope-includes-pete-buttigieg\/\"><strong>Michigan Democrats look toward a future some hope includes Pete Buttigieg<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/michigan-faces-critical-time-to-retain-its-348b-auto-industry-report\/\"><strong>Michigan faces \u2018critical time\u2019 to retain its $348B auto industry: report<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/michigan-economic-forecast-meh-in-2026-with-a-chance-for-optimism\/\"><strong>Michigan economic forecast in 2026: meh with a chance for optimism\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry proponents say Michigan <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/michigan-faces-critical-time-to-retain-its-348b-auto-industry-report\/\">faces a \u201ccritical time\u201d<\/a> as it seeks to keep a grip on its $348 billion auto industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buttigieg, who moved to Traverse City after his unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2020, offered other perspectives on both transportation and politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Electric vehicle enthusiasm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>US automakers have <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/ford-retreats-from-evs-after-michigan-spends-big-on-subsidies-for-battery-plants\/\">scaled back EV production<\/a> in response to the end of subsidies and slower-than-expected public adoption. The changes have cost billions of dollars in write-downs this year, and Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/after-1b-and-mixed-results-michigan-lawmakers-cooling-corporate-incentives\/\">heavily subsidized EV footprint<\/a> is largely undergoing retrofitting before it even launched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Buttigieg said, \u201cI remain fired up about what&#8217;s going on with EVs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He pointed to international EV development and sales, which lingers as a threat to American auto dominance as propulsion preferences face potential global shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you have a technology that is ultimately more advanced, policymakers cannot just put the toothpaste back into the tube,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is no question about whether this technology will be the future of the sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a big question about whether America will lead that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The US government\u2019s role in EVs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The US robustly supports fossil fuels, Buttigieg said, and should also work with industry to identify gaps in other fuels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to EVs, he said, the government may step back from batteries, which attracted billions in subsidies under President Joe Biden. Yet charging networks, which affect EV adoption, could be worthy of subsidies because they\u2019re not profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buttigieg said government should consider making \u201cits investment with at least as much commitment as the (manufacturers) have to make when they&#8217;re making huge (transportation) decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automated vehicles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Driverless vehicles are \u201cthe other great technological development that is not being talked about as much,\u201d Buttigieg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve advanced far enough that they are safer, he added, and the design is ready to advance beyond today\u2019s retrofit of a typical vehicle, which includes space for a driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology will make shared transit more likely, and possibly reduce car ownership. People also are likely to rethink how physical spaces are used for vehicles, such as parking lots, Buttigieg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result, he said, will be \u201ctectonic.\u201d That, in turn, will raise questions for policymakers and whether they keep up with technology, industry and research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Federal tariffs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since taking office, Trump has levied tariffs on imported cars and vehicle parts, along with steel and aluminum. He\u2019s also levied new import taxes on products from countries around the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University of Michigan economists initially predicted Michigan <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/michigans-economy-constant-uncertainty-sparks-fear-hope-stability\/\">could lose out on 13,000 jobs to the higher tariffs<\/a>. In late 2025, an updated report found the tariffs\u2019 impact would ultimately result in a \u201csmall positive\u201d for domestic auto production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buttigieg said the Biden administration used tariffs more sparingly, not to concentrate power in the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tariffs need to lead to a gain in manufacturing jobs, he added.
