With additional compensation, it increases his total package to nearly $3 million, said George Mason University Professor Emeritus James Finkelstein, who reviewed the contract at the request of Bridge Michigan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His base pay potentially sets a record for public university presidents, Finkelstein added<em>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe contract breaks new ground for a public university president,\u201d Finkelstein, who has reviewed hundreds of university presidents\u2019 contracts, said via email. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m certain that the presidents of other public flagship universities will look at this contract and want to renegotiate the terms of their agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U-M Board of Regents Chair Mark Bernstein pushed back, saying that Syverud\u2019s compensation is \u201cfar from unprecedented.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/u-ms-new-president-inherits-host-of-challenges-what-kent-syverud-faces\/\"><strong>U-M\u2019s new president inherits host of challenges: What Kent Syverud faces<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/santa-ono-rejected-university-florida-presidency-amid-conservative-backlash\/\"><strong>Santa Ono rejected for University of Florida presidency amid conservative backlash<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/wayne-state-president-leaves-with-bargain-settlement-of-760k-plus-health-care\/\"><strong>Wayne State president leaves with \u2018bargain\u2019 settlement of $760K, plus health care<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, the terms of this contract are consistent with the unrivaled complexity, scope and scale of the University of Michigan,\u201d Bernstein said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Behm, co-chair of the board, agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe board has done extensive research into the contract, and we are very comfortable with it,\u201d said Behm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regent Denise Ilitch added: \u201cWith the job responsibilities in today\u2019s world and the complexity of the University of Michigan, President-elect Kent Syverud is worth every penny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Syverud, who was hired this week by the U-M to start July 1, has the potential to earn up to 30% of his $2 million base salary in a performance award if he meets metrics that were not outlined in the five-year employment contract released Monday by the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you add in the supplemental retirement benefits, he is essentially getting $3 million per year,\u201d Finkelstein said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U-M granted former President Santa Ono a new contract in 2024, two years into his tenure, that awarded him a base pay of $1.3 million. Finkelstein said at the time that with other compensation, such as bonuses and deferred compensation, it was the first agreement for a public university president that virtually guaranteed an annual compensation package of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2024\/12\/08\/why-university-michigan-president-santa-ono-new-contract-unprecedented-public-higher-education\/76504472007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=undefined&amp;gca-ft=0&amp;gca-ds=sophi\">more than $2 million.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, Ono announced plans to step down from his post to potentially lead the University of Florida, where he might have earned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/quick-takes\/2025\/05\/29\/onos-uf-contract-valued-roughly-3m-year?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">$1.5 million in base pay <\/a>as president along with other compensation that could have garnered him nearly $3 million annual compensation package. But he didn\u2019t land the position.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald Landry, hired as the interim president of University of Florida, is earning a base salary of <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2025\/09\/florida-officials-confirm-ufs-interim-president-pick-00558162\">$2 million<\/a>, reports show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, a Chronicle of Higher Education report in September showed that University of Houston President Renu Khator in 2024 was the top-paid public university president among 180 chief executives pay and benefits. Her total compensation package was earning $3.1 million with a base pay of $1.06 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finkelstein criticized U-M\u2019s contract for Syverud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is little in this contract that protects the interests of the university or the citizens of Michigan,\u201d Finkelstein said. \u201cFrom my perspective, the Regents have failed to carry out their fiduciary duties as elected officials \u2026 In the end, the ever escalating compensation for these public executives will cause more harm than good for our public universities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bernstein said the board set benchmarks for Syverud\u2019s compensation by looking at what fellow Big 10 schools Ohio State University and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/penn-state-president-just-got-100900895.html\">Penn State University<\/a> pay their presidents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would be a breach of our fiduciary duties to fail to recruit the very best candidate for this enormously important job,\u201d Bernstein said. \u201cThat\u2019s a responsibility that we take seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finkelstein said that the regents\u2019 perspective on how public dollars are spent to compensate leaders essentially is \u201cconfirming that this is a race.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not good for anyone except the president.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Exactly the right person\u2019&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement to Bridge, Kay Jarvis, University of Michigan&#8217;s director of public affairs, noted that U-M is \u201cone of the largest and most complex institutions of any type in the country, and the job of president requires oversight of an extensive federal research portfolio and a multi-billion dollar healthcare enterprise. Compensation decisions reflect this vast scale and are designed to support strong governance and effective institutional management\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKent Syverud\u2019s total compensation aligns with the market for similar highly complex public and private entities,\u201d Jarvis added. \u201cHe is exactly the right person to lead the university during these difficult times for higher education, and our community is proud to welcome him back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Syverud earned two graduate degrees from the university: one in law and a master\u2019s degree in economics. He also taught at U-M\u2019s law school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tenure, perks, other details<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Syverud comes to the University of Michigan from Syracuse University, where he has been chancellor and president since 2014. It requires him to live in the university president\u2019s house on campus and grants him perks such as a car for professional and personal use<strong> <\/strong>and tickets to university-sponsored events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also provides him with a driver that will provide transportation and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is one of the few contracts I\u2019ve seen that explicitly addresses a president\u2019s personal security,\u201d said Finkelstein. \u201cI expect this is going to be a more common feature of presidential contracts in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of his contract in 2031, Syverud is entitled to take a 12-month administrative leave during which U-M will compensate him at whatever his base salary is then.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a one-year leave, Syverud may then return to the faculty but the terms are unusual, Finkelstein said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition to a sabbatical at his full presidential base pay, his faculty salary will be set at that rate for three additional years,\u201d Finkelstein said. \u201cI\u2019ve only seen that once before.&nbsp; Typically, once a president returns to the faculty, their salary is reduced \u2014 most often to 3\/4 of their former base or as the highest paid faculty member in their academic unit.&nbsp; But more worrisome is that he could resign the presidency after one day and get this benefit.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another shortcoming of the contract, Finkelstein said, is the \u201ctermination without cause\u201d clause. It says: <em>At the discretion of the Regents, the University may terminate your employment as President at any time without cause upon written notice to you. In the event of your termination without cause, you will be entitled to take an administrative leave and join the faculty in accordance with Section IV.C.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is just two sentences,\u201d Finkelstein said. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen one so short or lacking any meaningful detail.
