{"id":71454,"date":"2026-01-12T14:32:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T19:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/?p=71454"},"modified":"2026-01-12T19:08:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T00:08:49","slug":"a-wintry-winter-is-boosting-cold-weather-recreation-in-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/outdoors-life\/a-wintry-winter-is-boosting-cold-weather-recreation-in-michigan\/","title":{"rendered":"A wintry winter is boosting cold-weather recreation in Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>So far this winter, Michigan has seen slightly cooler-than-normal temperatures and above-average snowfall<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As people take advantage of the conditions, that could mean increased revenue for an industry that generated about $120 million in a previous season<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>While last winter was strong for outdoor recreation, the winters two and three years ago were warmer than average<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In Boyne Falls, there\u2019s a snow fort shaped like an igloo where you can sit on ice and order a glass of champagne or an <a href=\"https:\/\/cookieandkate.com\/classic-aperol-spritz-recipe\/\">Aperol spritz<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boyne Mountain Resort opened the bar, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boynemountain.com\/iglu-boyne-mountain\">Iglu,<\/a> on Jan. 3. The ski area hired the Austrian team Alpeniglu to build it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have these big balloons, like inflatables. The season has seen some stints of warmer temperatures, but nothing compared to the winters of 2022-23 and 2023-24, when higher-than-normal temps and a lack of snow resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-environment-watch\/climate-change-erasing-michigan-winters-taking-our-heritage-them\/\">event cancellations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wzmq19.com\/news\/326830\/mild-winter-causes-over-40-million-in-losses-for-michigan-ski-areas\/\">ski industry layoffs<\/a> and a loss of money for the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things got so bad, Michigan businesses impacted by the warm weather were <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/disaster-relief-loans-available-michigan-businesses-hurt-lack-snow\/?_gl=1*h6lhhm*_gcl_au*MTM2MjM1ODQ4MC4xNzYyMTg0Nzkw*_ga*MjcyODgzNDcwLjE3MzgwNzk1ODc.*_ga_SDMLQHFB10*czE3NjgyMzQ1OTQkbzEzNyRnMCR0MTc2ODIzNTg2NyRqNCRsMCRoMA..*_ga_1E2G9MSHX5*czE3NjgyMzQ1OTMkbzE0NSRnMSR0MTc2ODIzNTg2MiRqMTgkbDAkaDA.*_ga_KX5CRZVP9F*czE3NjgyMzQ1OTMkbzE0NCRnMSR0MTc2ODIzNTg2MiRqMTgkbDAkaDA.\">encouraged to apply for disaster relief loans<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far this winter, however, much of Michigan has seen slightly cooler-than normal temperatures and a little bit more snowfall than usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This first half of winter \u2014 October, November, December \u2014 all guidance was showing high probabilities of La Ni\u00f1a,\u201d said Sean Christensen, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Gaylord. \u201cWhat that typically means is a little bit cooler for us and then also more precipitation. And that&#8217;s what we saw for the most part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was statewide, including in Detroit and Grand Rapids, \u201ceven with those warm sprouts,&#8221; Christensen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This cooler winter comes amid a trend of winters in Michigan <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-environment-watch\/climate-change-erasing-michigan-winters-taking-our-heritage-them\/\">becoming slightly warmer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snow this season has blanketed many parts of the state already, with Sault Ste. Marie, Gaylord and Alpena just a few of the spots <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/apx\/snow\">ahead of averages as of Sunday<\/a>. Will they pass the record of 355.9 inches from the 1978\u201379 winter season? Sign up for the Bridge Michigan Outdoors newsletter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/signup\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to some early-season snowfall and cooler temperatures, most ski areas across the state opened early or on time, said Mike Panich, executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted there was a warmup around Christmas and last week but said that, overall, \u201cconditions have been outstanding, and the crowds have been showing up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Precipitation has also been good for places like the Cross Country Ski Headquarters in Roscommon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis reminds me of winters from 15 to 20 years ago,\u201d said owner George Frye. \u201cWe were just getting days and days of snow, and we\u2019ve had pristine trails for several weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural snowfall is important for the family-owned business, which only uses snowmaking in a limited capacity. Frye said the good weather has meant people are turning out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe kind of judge it by how full the parking lot is,\u201d he said. Marie has seen its fair share of snowfall, with more than 100 inches as of Monday, when 60 inches is typical for this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda Hoath, the executive director of Visit Sault Ste. Marie, said good snow translates to visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t want to come up when it rain-snows,\u201d she said. \u201cThey want to come up when they can get some good, fluffy white snow. And that\u2019s what it\u2019s been here. It\u2019s been beautiful.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the area caters to people looking to snowshoe, cross-country ski, fat-tire bike and more, one of the biggest winter pastimes in Sault Ste. Marie is snowmobiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe streets are open to snowmobilers,\u201d Hoath said. \u201cPeople drive their snowmobiles to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area also hosts the International 500 Snowmobile Race.
