For the first time in decades, residents will be able to walk or bike, in addition to driving, into Canada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expected to open in early 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com\/\">the bridge is designed to ease congestion<\/a> at existing crossings. Once it\u2019s built, it will become the only bridge from Michigan to Canada that allows for foot and bike traffic, joining just a few other US-Canadian crossings with pedestrian lanes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople didn\u2019t want us to lose a unique opportunity to design a new international crossing without considering the incorporation of a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists,\u201d said Heather Grondin, chief relations officer for the Gordie Howe International Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction <a href=\"https:\/\/gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com\/project\/our-story\/\">began in 2018 and as of Nov. 13<\/a>, it\u2019s 98% completed. Though an official opening date hasn\u2019t been announced, officials expect the bridge will <a href=\"https:\/\/gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Construction-Update-Winter-2025.pdf\">open early 2026<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gordie Howe International Bridge will have six lanes, three in each direction for vehicular traffic. The added bridge is expected to alleviate slowdowns on the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge, which has four lanes for traffic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/urban-affairs\/a-detroit-ticket-tax-study-forecasts-millions-from-sports-entertainment\/\"><strong>A Detroit ticket tax? Study forecasts millions from sports, entertainment<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/urban-affairs\/10-years-after-michigan-took-over-belle-isle-detroit-takes-stock\/\"><strong>10 years after Michigan took over Belle Isle, Detroit takes stock<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/urban-affairs\/i-375-project-delayed-to-address-concerns-from-detroiters\/\"><strong>I-375 project delayed to address concerns from Detroiters<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis bridge, along with the adjacent infrastructure, will connect directly from Interstate-75 to the Ontario highway system, known as Highway 401, without trucks or cars having to stop at traffic lights along the way,\u201d Grondin said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of backups, Grondin noted that cars will be contained within the port of entry to avoid traffic congestion on I-75 and trucks will also be required to turn their engine off during inspection to reduce noise and air pollution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of work to ensure that \u2026 people will have a destination when they go across the multi-use path and will be able to connect to much broader trail networks,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating another port of entry to and from our northern neighbor has been in the works for over 20 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several studies were <a href=\"https:\/\/gordiehoweinternationalbridge.com\/project\/our-story\/\">conducted in the early 2000s<\/a> to look more closely at cross-border travel patterns amid concerns that infrastructure at the time would not support an anticipated rise in traffic. In 2012, then-Governor Rick Snyder and Canada\u2019s prime minister announced an agreement on a publicly owned Windsor-Detroit bridge crossing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Ambassador Bridge is basically privately owned and controlled by one family and I think there was nervousness around that,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/ilitchbusiness.wayne.edu\/profile\/gs9974\">Jeff Rightmer,<\/a> professor of supply chain management at Wayne State University. \u201cThe new Bridge alleviates some of that monopoly that the Moroun family had.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roughly $4.4 billion project was funded by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, the governing body that oversees the business affairs of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, and financed in Canadian dollars, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/ipd\/project_profiles\/mi_gordie_howe_int_bridge.aspx\">Federal Highway Administration<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the Canadian government paid for the bridge, it will recoup the toll revenue and receive ongoing capital and availability payments to operate, maintain and rehabilitate the project for the next 36 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it made it much more attractive to the U.S., specifically Michigan, (for Canada) to take on a lot of that debt,\u201d Rightmer said. \u201cYou can tell that Canada really wanted to get it done.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new way across<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The additional bridge will provide drivers with more options on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ability to have more than the Ambassador Bridge, the tunnel and the Blue Water Bridge up in Port Huron is just huge for the region,\u201d Rightmer said.&nbsp; \u201cThe ability to move more stuff back and forth is only going to benefit Michigan and Canada.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" data-attachment-id=\"70434\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/quality-life\/gordie-howe-bridge-to-give-michigan-a-walkable-bikeable-link-to-canada\/attachment\/ghibtowers1125\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bridgemi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GHIBtowers1125.jpg?fit=1536%2C1023&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1536,1023\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;11&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;FC6540&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1760948928&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;16&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;100&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.02&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"GHIBtowers1125\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;The publicly funded project will connect I-75 directly to Highway 401, easing congestion at existing crossings and offering travelers more flexibility. Only the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacebridge.com\/cyclist-pedestrian-crossing\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Peace Bridge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagarafallslive.com\/rainbow_bridge.htm\">Rainbow Bridge<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tibridge.com\/home\/\">Thousand Islands Bridge<\/a> allow foot traffic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ambassador Bridge originally had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambassadorbridge.com\/bridge-facts\/\">eight-foot-wide sidewalk<\/a> for pedestrians but it was closed after the 9\/11 attacks amid security concerns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith all of the parks and the riverfront redevelopment \u2026 it gives the average Detroiter a lot more access to Canada and makes it a lot easier to get there,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pedestrians and cyclists will enter through a separate port but are still required to show proper identification, either a passport or an enhanced license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Gordie Howe Bridge set to offer new lanes for cars, trucks, and even pedestrians, the Ambassador Bridge raised its tolls for 2026, signaling the start of a new rivalry for cross-border traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ambassadorbridge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Posting-for-January-1-2026-Toll-Increase-1.pdf\">Ambassador Bridge announced<\/a> the following toll changes<strong>, <\/strong>effective Jan. 1:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cars, buses and motorcycles&#8217; rate increased by $1, from $9 to $10<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vehicles with trailers&#8217; rate increased from $18 to $20<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commercial vehicles&#8217; rates increased from $14 to $15 per axle for those with an A-Pass or E-Z Pass and to $20 per axle for vehicles without an account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The bridge&#8217;s escort service for wide or oversized loads increased from $125 to $135.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You can walk, but run won&#8217;t move<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with a new bridge rising over the river, Detroit\u2019s oldest international marathon plans to stay its course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants in the Detroit Free Press International Marathon cross the Ambassador Bridge to Canada and return through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the Gordie Howe Bridge being wider and a bit shorter, Aaron Velthoven, the race\u2019s executive producer, said there are no plans to change the course of the race in the near future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe (Gordie Howe) Bridge is much further away from where we traditionally start and finish,\u201d he said. \u201cTo even entertain something like that, we would have to dramatically change where we start and finish.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both bridges are roughly 150 feet above the Detroit River at its highest point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Ambassador Bridge is \u2026&nbsp;
