The numbers announced Tuesday are an increase of 8,971 students from this time last year, according to numbers provided by MiLEAP. That\u2019s a 21% increase in enrollment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GSRP is part of the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mileap\/early-childhood-education\/prek-for-all\">Pre-K for All initiative<\/a>. The initiative includes the federally funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mileap\/early-childhood-education\/early-learners-and-care\/hssco\">Head Start preschool program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/guest-commentary\/opinion-transitional-kindergarten-offers-lessons-michigan-early-learning\/\">developmental kindergarten<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mileap\/early-childhood-education\/early-learners-and-care\/special-ed-05\/early-childhood-special-education-ages-3-5\">early childhood special education<\/a>. Officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mileap\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/mileap\/Documents\/Early-Childhood-Education\/PreK-For-All\/PreK-For-All-Implementation-Brief.pdf?rev=8981218c9d214dc2b6fd6655eeae5c1d&amp;hash=3DDA005F93292506D4BE787AB72084AF\">have set a goal<\/a> to \u201cserve a total of 88,500 of the state\u2019s 118,000 four-year-old children in publicly funded programs by 2027.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year&#8217;s substantial increase in enrollment is thanks in part to our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H2YvBsYBxow&amp;list=PLswYTrOLgdz5_7XGDPdxcBGzNdABIt_b-&amp;index=1\"> public awareness campaign<\/a> to get that word out across the state that pre-K is truly for all,\u201d said MiLEAP Director Beverly Walker-Griffea.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawmakers allocated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2025-2026\/billanalysis\/House\/pdf\/2025-HLA-0166-Z0T5KHXB.pdf\">about $657 million<\/a> in funding for the Great Start Readiness Program this year, which now serves students regardless of family income. This funding also includes a study of the program and student transportation funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis program is truly for everyone,\u201d said Emily Laidlaw, deputy director of early education at MiLEAP. \u201cIt\u2019s not just for low-income families. It\u2019s not just for middle class families. But everyone. Mississippi\u2019s ex-superintendent has ideas<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2023-2024\/publicact\/pdf\/2024-PA-0120.pdf\">previous budget<\/a>, leaders allocated $1.95 million for a statewide outreach campaign. Leaders did not include new funding in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/documents\/2025-2026\/billanalysis\/House\/pdf\/2025-HLA-0166-Z0T5KHXB.pdf\">budget<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Child-care providers, local schools, nonprofits and businesses operate the program across the state. There are four- and five-day programs and full- and half-day options. Laidlaw said about 30% of students in the Great Start Readiness Program are attending pre-K through community-based organizations which include nonprofits, private businesses and religious institutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local and state officials urged interested families to consider enrolling their children in the program.
