Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared at the Philadelphia Mint on Wednesday to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/bessent-us-treasurer-strike-final-penny-philadelphia-mint-2025-11-12\/\"> watch as the final one-cent coins were stamped<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It marked the end of a coinage first produced in the US in 1792. Before this week, the last coin to be discontinued was the half-cent in 1857.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. The feds just cut workers\u2019 pay<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/michigan-lawmakers-eliminate-economic-development-agency\/\"><strong>Michigan lawmakers: Eliminate economic development agency<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/poll-tariffs-grocery-costs-have-michigan-residents-sweating-economy\/\"><strong>Poll: Tariffs, grocery costs have Michigan residents sweating economy\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Retailers and their customers are already feeling the impact of the phase out, with penny shortages and some stores forced to round up or round down to the closest nickel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Michigan, chains like Home Depot and Kroger have posted signs asking customers to use exact change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those shortages are bound to become more frequent, with trade associations<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rila.org\/focus-areas\/finance\/main-street-businesses-urge-swift-congressional-ac\"> urging Congress<\/a> or the administration to step in and offer guidance to businesses about how to handle shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will the elimination of pennies save the government money?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The move will save $56 million, Beach told reporters at the Philadelphia Mint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because every copper-plated zinc penny<a href=\"https:\/\/conversableeconomist.com\/2025\/02\/17\/costs-of-pennies-and-nickels\/\"> costs 3.69 cents to mint<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The savings from cutting pennies could be eaten up if the demand for nickels goes up \u2014&nbsp; the nickel-and-copper five-cent piece costs<a href=\"https:\/\/conversableeconomist.com\/2025\/02\/17\/costs-of-pennies-and-nickels\/\"> 13.78 cents to produce<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do stores do when they are out of pennies?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Without pennies, stories will round up or down to the nearest nickel on cash purchases. Sometimes you\u2019ll save up to 2 cents, sometimes you\u2019ll pay an extra cent or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, at least some Michigan Kroger stores are rounding to the nearest nickel. A call to a spokesperson for The Kroger Co. in Cincinnati was not returned to Bridge, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/business\/2025\/11\/03\/kroger-asking-for-exact-change-penny-shortage\/87070464007\/\">company this month told the Cincinnati Enquirer it won\u2019t refuse pennies for payment.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far the shortages have been sporadic. (AP Photo\/Matt Slocum)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will stores round up or down if I pay with a credit card?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No. You\u2019ll continue to pay the exact amount with credit cards, personal checks and electronic payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is there a shortage?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With at least 114 billion pennies in circulation \u2014 more than 300 pennies per U.S. resident \u2014 it\u2019s difficult to fathom why there would be a shortage. But more than half of those pennies are sitting in drawers, penny jars, or beneath couch cushions, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aba.com\/news-research\/analysis-guides\/faq-phasing-out-the-penny\"> American Bankers Association<\/a>. All those out-of-circulation coins is why the US Mint typically stamped an additional 3 billion pennies a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that no new pennies are being produced, banks can\u2019t order new supplies, and banks then aren\u2019t able to sell the rolls of shiny new pennies to businesses that conduct a lot of cash sales, like convenience stores and groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What about all the pennies in my penny jar?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re still \u201creal\u201d money because pennies continue to be legal tender. Banks will still accept them \u2014 in fact, they\u2019ll be glad to get them. Michigan-based Dart Bank, with branches in Ingham County, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox47news.com\/neighborhoods\/mason-leslie\/local-bank-offers-20-bonus-for-pennies-as-u-s-stops-production\">offered a 20% bonus<\/a> on pennies turned in by anyone beginning in early November through its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dart.bank\/copper-that-counts\/\">Copper That Counts<\/a>\u201d promotion. For example, if you turn in $5 of pennies, you\u2019ll get $6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an easy and rewarding way for community members to put spare change to good use and earn a little extra in the process,\u201d Michelle Carpenter, a Dart Bank senior vice president, said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be forewarned: there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox47news.com\/neighborhoods\/mason-leslie\/local-bank-offers-20-bonus-for-pennies-as-u-s-stops-production\">25,000 penny limit per month<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will pennies become more valuable?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably not.
