You just got married, and you had kids,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spent her 20s focused on her<b> <\/b>education and starting her own communications company. By her 30s, she\u2019d become adept at sweeping away questions about when she would have children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, at age 46, she lives in Grand Rapids with her husband Josh Byler, a construction worker. They\u2019re no strangers to buying diapers, but they\u2019re not for their kids \u2014 they\u2019re for Jax, a Jack Russell terrier who is blind and has to wear a diaper around the house, one of their eight rescue dogs pattering about the red, two-story home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t hate children. It\u2019s not like I\u2019m the witch in Hansel and Gretel,\u201d said Bode. \u201cIt was never something I wanted. There are other priorities that I have in life, and I don\u2019t think that your worth should be defined by another human you\u2019ve created.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"dr-paragraph full-width-image dr-paragraph--full-width-image\">\n<div class=\"card card--bg dr-paragraph full-width-image dr-paragraph--full-width-image\">\n<div class=\"card__image\">\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bridgemi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/NonparentBode_photo2.jpg?resize=1300%2C867&amp;ssl=1\" width=\"1300\" height=\"867\" alt=\"Kim Bode embraces one dog. (Kristen Norman\/Bridge Michigan)\n                            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple is among the growing number of childfree adults \u2014 people who don\u2019t have or don\u2019t want children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The percentage of non-parents who never want kids more than doubled in two decades, going from 14% in 2002 to 29% in 2023, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jomf.13097\">Michigan State University study<\/a> that used data from the National Survey of Family Growth. The same research team found that 27% of adult Michiganders \u2014 an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8208578\/\">2 million Michigan adults<\/a> \u2014 identify as childfree.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/taxes-medicaid-what-trumps-big-beautiful-bill-would-mean-michigan\">From taxes to Medicaid, what Trump\u2019s \u2018big, beautiful bill\u2019 would mean for Michigan<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/studies-raise-warnings-about-michigan-child-care-access-cost\">Studies raise warnings about Michigan child care access, cost<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/panel-keep-young-people-michigan-includes-one-person-under-40-so-far\">Panel to keep young people in Michigan includes one person under 40 so far\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a sobering statistic for Michigan, where a stagnant \u2014 and projected to soon be shrinking \u2014 population is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/can-michigan-defuse-its-population-time-bomb-see-how-far-we-fall-short\">major factor in the state\u2019s economic doldrums<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8208578\/\">47% of Michigan adults<\/a> who have never had children, the state has continued to struggle with birth rates. In 2023, there were more deaths than live births in Michigan for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2025\/01\/michigan-reports-fewest-babies-born-since-1940s.html\">fourth consecutive year<\/a>, and the fewest babies born since the 1940s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"dr-paragraph right-aligned-blockquote-xl dr-paragraph--right-aligned-blockquote-xl\">\n<div class=\"region region--float-right region--float-right-xl dr-paragraph right-aligned-blockquote-xl dr-paragraph--right-aligned-blockquote-xl\">\n<div class=\"region__content\">\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"cec9a4c3-2b30-43d6-933e-3a6c8a413bcd\" data-title=\"updated 202: Michigan deaths, births\" data-type=\"interactive\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><script>!function(e,n,i,s){var d=\"InfogramEmbeds\";var o=e.getElementsByTagName(n)[0];if(window[d]&&window[d].initialized)window[d].process&&window[d].process();else if(!e.getElementById(i)){var r=e.createElement(n);r.async=1,r.id=i,r.src=s,o.parentNode.insertBefore(r,o)}}(document,\"script\",\"infogram-async\",\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\");<\/script>\n\t        <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2024\/20240525.htm\">drooping fertility rate<\/a> has become a policy issue in Washington, where the Trump administration is flirting with financial incentives to encourage births.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Bode and Byler, incentives aren\u2019t likely to change their minds about children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes we are kind of looked at differently, like, \u2018Oh, your life must not be as full and fulfilled,\u2019\u201d Byler told Bridge Michigan. \u201cThere\u2019s joy and fulfillment in other things \u2026&nbsp; We spend our time and money with dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple has developed a reputation for taking in rescue dogs, Bode added: \u201cWe have two blind ones, we have one that doesn\u2019t have any teeth. I mean, the list goes on and on, like, we just take in the ones nobody wants.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jennifer Watling Neal, co-author of MSU\u2019s study, said her research focuses on adults who have consciously chosen not to have children, not those who are \u201cnot yet parents\u201d but may have children in the future, or childless individuals who want children but are prevented by social or biological factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe choice to be childfree is becoming a little bit less stigmatized,\u201d Neal said. \u201cSo some of the growth that we\u2019re seeing in the prevalence rates could just be people feeling more comfortable saying that they\u2019re childfree and saying, \u2018No, I don\u2019t have kids and I really don\u2019t want them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Census data backs up the MSU study\u2019s findings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nationally, an analysis of census data by The Washington Post shows a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/11\/03\/millennials-only-children\/\">growing<\/a> number of women ages 25 to 44 have never given birth \u2014 climbing from 28% in 2012 to nearly 35% in 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those figures may grow, as younger generations worry about climate change, reproductive rights and the ability to afford a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a Pew Research Center survey of people under 50 unlikely to have children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2024\/07\/25\/the-experiences-of-u-s-adults-who-dont-have-children\/\">over half<\/a> responded they \u201cjust don\u2019t want to\u201d have children, and over a third said they don\u2019t want to because they\u2019re concerned with the state of the world or believe they can\u2019t afford to raise a child.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adrienne Wallace, 48, is an associate professor of advertising and public relations at Grand Valley State University who\u2019s made the choice to be childfree. She told Bridge she\u2019s not surprised by the results of Neal\u2019s study because she\u2019s seen this trend in her classroom, with an increasing number of her students saying they\u2019re not interested in having kids.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI work with a lot of young people, so I\u2019ve been seeing this change over time to even college-aged students, not just after college,\u201d Wallace said. \u201cI think that how women especially are thinking about what their futures look like, and not to be cliche, but in this political economy, there\u2019s a lot of things to be wary about in relationship to being a mom or being pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Wallace and her husband were both married before, they were hesitant to have kids and decided to reframe their definition of family to focus on community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve just chosen to invest my time and efforts in, literally, other people\u2019s children,\u201d she said. <b>\u201c<\/b>My students jokingly refer to me as their PR mom.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration is considering a $5,000 \u201cbaby bonus\u201d for new mothers to incentivize birth. A Department of Transportation directive will also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/02\/28\/nx-s1-5303471\/new-directive-on-dot-spending-takes-community-birth-and-marriage-rates-into-account\">prioritize funding<\/a> for communities with high birth and marriage rates. A<b> <\/b>budget bill working its way through Congress and supported by Trump includes a one-time deposit of $1,000 into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/22\/tax-bill-maga-baby-bonus-now-called-trump-accounts-who-is-eligible.html\">savings accounts<\/a> for newborns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such policies haven\u2019t worked elsewhere, said Jay Zigmont, the CEO and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/childfreewealth.com\/\">Childfree Wealth<\/a>, based in Tennessee but with clients around the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA financial choice of $5,000 versus the <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/money\/personal-finance\/articles\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-raise-a-child\">cost of a kid<\/a>, (which on average costs families over $300,000 from birth to age 18), that\u2019s just not a good financial choice,\u201d he said. Countries like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/13\/world\/asia\/birth-rate-fertility-policy-japan.html\">Japan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-47192612\">Hungary<\/a> that offer baby incentives have seen birth rates continue to plummet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More adults are choosing to save money and go the childfree route, and have vastly different financial planning needs, said Zigmont, who created a planning firm solely for people without children.
