Gretchen Whitmer joined him at the base<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Michigan officials on both sides of the aisle had fought for new fighter mission at the Macomb County base\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that Selfridge Air National Guard Base will receive 21 F-15EX Eagle II fighters to replace a fleet of retiring jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve come in person to lay to rest any doubts about Selfridge,\u201d Trump said at the Harrison Township base, hours before a planned speech in Warren to mark 100 days of his second term in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those joining Trump at the base Tuesday: Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who met with the president this month to advocate for a new fighter mission that would protect the base\u2019s estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganbusiness.org\/press-releases\/2023\/05\/selfridge-groundbreaking\/\">$850 million economic impact<\/a> and roughly 5,000 military and civilian jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She and others had worried about the base\u2019s future because its A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft are in the process of being retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crucial for the Michigan economy. About that \u2018miracle\u2019 you promised \u2026<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/trump-sign-executive-order-offering-automakers-some-relief-his-25-tariffs\"><b>Trump to sign executive order offering automakers some relief on his 25% tariffs<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/michigan-evolving-politically-maps-show-how-trump-won-state-changing\"><b>Michigan is evolving politically: Maps show how Trump won, state is changing<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Whitmer, who sparred with Trump during his first term, and House Speaker Matt Hall met with Trump in the Oval Office earlier this month to lobby to secure new fighter jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, she met Trump on the tarmac and he praised her as \u201cvery effective\u201d in working with Republicans to secure new jets for the base, saying she has \u201cdone a good job.\u201d The two appeared to hug, but she told the Associated Press that Trump \u201cleaned in\u201d while they were shaking hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Whitmer spokesperson said the governor was at Selfridge \u201cto support her troops and the longstanding effort she has made to secure support\u201d for the jets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall issued a statement calling the new fighter mission \u201cexactly the kind of strength, power and American muscle our state deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe tried for years to get this done with Obama and Biden, and they failed to do anything,\u201d Hall said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several other lawmakers, from Republican US Reps. John James and Lisa McClain, issued statements praising Trump and the announcement. US Sen. Gary Peters, a Democrat, said the announcement was the result of \u201cyears of persistent work and advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote twitter-tweet is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>For over 100 years, Selfridge has kept Michigan safe, powered local businesses, and given generations of families a place to serve and succeed. Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin, both Democrats, and Republican US Rep. Last year, Selfridge was selected as the preferred location for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/3644034\/update-selfridge-ang-base-selected-as-next-location-for-kc-46a-pegasus\/\">squadron of KC-46A Pegasus<\/a> tankers that refuel aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State and federal officials have committed millions to the base\u2019s upkeep, and Whitmer\u2019s state budget proposal included another $26 million request for upgrades to the Selfridge runway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump called the F-15EX Eagle II the \u201cbest in the world\u201d and \u201cfresh off the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fighter jet is manufactured by Boeing and costs about $97 million apiece. Boeing says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing.com\/defense\/f-15ex#capabilities\">jet has a broader range<\/a> than any other fighter in the US Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joel Rutherford, a retired US Air Force traffic controller and member of the Macomb County Veterans Services Commission, told Bridge he\u2019s wary of any announcement Trump makes about the long-term future of Selfridge unless it has the full backing of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"dr-paragraph right-aligned-image dr-paragraph--right-aligned-image\">\n<div class=\"card card--bg card--float-right dr-paragraph right-aligned-image dr-paragraph--right-aligned-image\">\n<div class=\"card__image\">\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" onerror=\"if (typeof newspackHandleImageError === 'function') newspackHandleImageError(this);\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/bridgemi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Joel-Rutherford-1.jpg?resize=1300%2C1612&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"1300\" height=\"1612\" alt=\"Joel Rutherford\"><\/figure><div>  <p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"card__content\">\n                                      Joel Rutherford speaks during a Macomb County forum hosted by the Michigan Democratic Party. (Lauren Gibbons\/Bridge Michigan)<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started my traffic control career there, and I finished it there as a civilian, so Selfridge holds a place in my heart,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I want to see something that\u2019s going to be best not just for the base but also for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easy to make a promise, but then never deliver,\u201d Rutherford continued.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s Macomb County visit marks a return to ground zero of his 2024 Michigan victory. Voters in that county gave him a 68,000-vote margin in a state he won by just over 80,000 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three months in, Trump has taken at least some action on many of his campaign promises. But he\u2019s also facing legal scrutiny for his unprecedented use of executive power and criticism over his aggressive tariff strategy that\u2019s sent financial markets spinning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the impact on Michigan so far is, at best, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/michigan-government\/trump-returning-michigan-mark-100-days-about-miracle-you-promised\">mixed or unclear<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the appearances at Selfridge and Macomb Community College, the president is expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/business-watch\/trump-sign-executive-order-offering-automakers-some-relief-his-25-tariffs\">sign an executive order Tuesday<\/a> to relax some of his 25% tariffs on autos and auto parts amid concerns that the tariffs could raise prices and make US companies less competitive in international markets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ahead of a campaign event in Warren, President Donald Trump says he\u2019s putting \u2018to rest any doubts about Selfridge,\u2019 announcing 21 F-15EX jets to replace retiring planes.
