Does it work?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What happens when families have extra cash on hand each month \u2014 no strings attached?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of moms in two different cities are finding out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flint, Michigan and Jackson, Mississippi, may be separated by more than 900 miles, but their similarities have driven a new approach to fighting child poverty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both have high rates of poverty. In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table\/ACSST1Y2023.S1701?g=160XX00US2629000\">Flint<\/a>, 41% of people live below poverty, and 26% in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table\/ACSST1Y2023.S1701?g=160XX00US2836000\">Jackson<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epaoig.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/2024-09\/full_report_-_24-e-0055_errata.pdf\">Tens of thousands of residents<\/a>&nbsp;in the majority Black cities have also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30507775\/#:~:text=Context%3A%20The%20City%20of%20Flint,other%20contaminants%20in%20drinking%20water.\">dealt with dire water crises<\/a>&nbsp;within the last decade alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both states have initiatives \u2014 one new and the other longstanding \u2014 to ease the economic hurdles families face,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/10\/07\/prices-are-up-in-all-us-metro-areas-but-some-much-more-than-others\/\">as prices for the basics remain high<\/a>. In Michigan, the Rx Kids program launched this year to provide $7,500 in total to Flint moms, during and after pregnancy. In Mississippi, the Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust has been around since 2018. The program, meant for low-income Black mothers living in subsidized housing, offers Jackson moms $12,000 all together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programs \u2014 often referred to as guaranteed income<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>or cash transfer \u2014 are among&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/guaranteedincome.us\/\">dozens&nbsp;<\/a>across the country experimenting with providing direct cash payments to people with the greatest need, like expectant moms and low-income mothers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s evidence that extra cash in hand can ease financial hardships for families, such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/policy-issues\/coronavirus\/assistance-for-american-families-and-workers\/child-tax-credit\">Child Tax Credit<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a tax break for eligible families with kids \u2014 and how its pandemic-era expansion had cut&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/610831a16c95260dbd68934a\/t\/63732dd8efcf0e5c76aea26e\/1668492763484\/Child-Tax-Credit-Research-Roundup-One-Year-On-CPSP-2022.pdf\">child poverty in about half<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"dr-paragraph right-aligned-blockquote dr-paragraph--right-aligned-blockquote\">\n<div class=\"region region--float-right dr-paragraph right-aligned-blockquote dr-paragraph--right-aligned-blockquote\">\n<div class=\"region__content\">\n<div class=\"infogram-embed\" data-id=\"71ea0c5e-c18c-47ce-a39f-faf5d4909b1f\" data-title=\"Bridge Detroit Box\" data-type=\"interactive\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><script>!function(e,i,n,s){var t=\"InfogramEmbeds\",d=e.getElementsByTagName(\"script\")[0];if(window[t]&&window[t].initialized)window[t].process&&window[t].process();else if(!e.getElementById(n)){var o=e.createElement(\"script\");o.async=1,o.id=n,o.src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed-loader-min.js\",d.parentNode.insertBefore(o,d)}}(document,0,\"infogram-async\");<\/script>\n\t        <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><a data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/michigans-55m-experiment-guaranteed-income-begins-flint-moms#:~:text=Michigan%E2%80%99s%20%2455M%20experiment%20with%20guaranteed%20income%20begins%20with%20Flint%20moms%20\" delay=\"150\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/michigans-55m-experiment-guaranteed-income-begins-flint-moms#:~:text=Michigan%E2%80%99s%20%2455M%20experiment%20with%20guaranteed%20income%20begins%20with%20Flint%20moms%20\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan\u2019s $55M experiment with guaranteed income begins with Flint moms&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As research continues, Michigan is a hotbed for the latest experiment. Michigan lawmakers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2024\/06\/27\/michigan-state-budget-spending-plan-schools-government\/74215343007\/\">in June approved<\/a>&nbsp;a tranche of money for Rx Kids to expand beyond Flint. If poverty is defined as the lack of income, then cash assistance is the most straightforward way to alleviate poverty and can be an \u201cinstant solution\u201d to that problem, said Mary Bogle, a principal research associate with the Washington, D.C.-based Urban Institute. (Credit: Ryan Garza, Detroit Free Press)\n                            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018It gave me a peace of mind\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Shaquille Washington was homeless for three months,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>she slept in the park<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>with her<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>young son, sometimes on a bench and other times in a gym.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mom \u2014 her \u201cbig boss\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014 died in 2017.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Washington found herself homeless as she reeled from grief and let her apartment go. Her son remembers little of that time aside from memories of<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>bus rides, she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington, a mom of two, vowed that her kids will never know homelessness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll only experience homelessness by choice because the foundation that I\u2019m trying to lay out for them is going to work,\u201d Washington, 31, said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to say it should work. It\u2019s going to work.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The walls of Washington\u2019s home at the Commonwealth Village apartments in Jackson<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>are filled with pictures and mementos of her mother and grandmother.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>A heart-shaped necklace, with a picture of her mom, sits around Washington\u2019s neck. \u201cMy angel,\u201d it says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both women were central figures in her life.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Her grandmother took her in after she became homeless, moving from Texas to Mississippi to be with Washington. When her grandma died just a<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>few years after her mom, Washington fell into a depression. Washington found out she was pregnant with her daughter that same year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was literally going through my whole pregnancy by myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After setbacks and back-to-back losses, in 2021 Washington found out she had been selected for Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust, a program specifically for low-income families led by Black moms living in subsidized housing, like Commonwealth Village.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She almost did a cartwheel from the relief.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington received $1,000 a month throughout 2022. The additional cash gave her financial stability,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>helping her stock up on the basics \u2014<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>diapers, clothes, shoes and a car \u2014<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>and save. She threw a baby shower and got maternity pictures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had diapers stacked up to the top of my closet, and my pantry, full of diapers, wipes. I didn\u2019t have to get nothing literally for a whole year,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She felt like a supermom because she was able to buy her son what he wanted. (Credit: Ryan Garza, Detroit Free Press)\n                            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do guaranteed income programs work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust came about after the organization under which it operates, Springboard to Opportunities, heard from residents about the day-to-day realities of their lives, like struggling with transportation and paying for extracurricular activities for children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were barriers that could be resolved with money, said Aisha Nyandoro, CEO of Springboard to Opportunities, who launched the program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust set out to provide $1,000 a month for a year with no strings attached for Black mothers living in federally subsidized affordable housing, along with $1,000 per child into college savings accounts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to make sure that not only were we shifting the narrative on cash. We were also shifting the narrative on how we talk about mothers, and we were shifting the narrative specifically on how we talk about Black mothers within this country,\u201d Nyandoro said. \u201cAnd we wanted to name that because of sexism, racism and capitalism, Black mothers within this country are some of the most financially vulnerable because of the policies and systems that we put in place and that we have allowed to continue to be perpetuated.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it launched, Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/springboardto.org\/menu-storytelling\/reports\/\">supported more than 400 moms<\/a>. The most recent cohort wrapped up in September, and<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Springboard to Opportunities expected to select the next group of mothers by mid-December. The first payments are slated to go out in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10705422.2023.2190327\">study published last year<\/a>&nbsp;found that mothers enrolled in the program were less likely to report difficulty paying for food, compared to moms who weren\u2019t receiving the extra cash. They were more likely to own their own vehicle and afford gas. They were able to save and not rely so much on high-interest borrowing. At the time, mothers in both groups dealt with effects of the pandemic, including increased food costs and unemployment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10705422.2023.2190327\">Researchers<\/a>&nbsp;point out \u201cthe unconditional cash transfers did not impact labor participation or have discernible effects on family planning\u201d and \u201cthere was also no evidence that the mothers used the money for frivolous purchases.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash assistance programs \u2014 if big enough \u2014 can reduce poverty,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>said Irwin Garfinkel, co-founding director of the Columbia Population Research Center and the Center on Poverty and Social Policy. The best example of that was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/policy-issues\/coronavirus\/assistance-for-american-families-and-workers\/child-tax-credit\">the expanded Child Tax Credit in 2021<\/a>. The credit increased from $2,000 to $3,600 for kids under six and $3,000 for other eligible children under 18. Families were also able to receive half of their 2021 Child Tax Credits in monthly payments instead of waiting for tax filing season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt cut child poverty by nearly a half and once we eliminated it,<a href=\"https:\/\/povertycenter.columbia.edu\/publication\/what-2023-child-poverty-rates-could-have-looked-like\">&nbsp;child poverty doubled<\/a>. So, all the gains were lost when we eliminated the program,\u201d Garfinkel said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash supplements are not a new concept, though guaranteed income programs&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/10\/business\/economy\/guaranteed-income.html\">have gained traction<\/a>&nbsp;in cities across the country, from Louisville to Ann Arbor. Since 2017, 150 such programs have been announced across the country,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/economicsecurityproject.org\/work\/guaranteed-income\/\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to the Economic Security Project. Credit: Ryan Garza, Detroit Free Press\n                            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018I\u2019m not lazy\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Money wouldn\u2019t bring back Jacavia Moore\u2019s mother, who died in 2019, and it wouldn\u2019t bring peace or happiness, but it would still mean something for the 30-year-old single mom. She wants to be a part of the Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust. The program would help her buy her children more clothes and wash them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt can bring about a lot of things that you can\u2019t just snap a finger and get. If I was to get blessed with that and save up every month, I would be able to have at least $1,500 for a deposit \u2014 to move in a home,\u201d she said at a neighborhood block party in late September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Moore came to the Commonwealth Village apartments in 2022, she was homeless for several months, living out of a hotel, a shed, with a friend and her father. She was pregnant without a steady place to sleep at night.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, she\u2019s in a three-bedroom apartment with her two young children, ages 2 and 4, one of whom has autism, and her sister.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just trying to make it,\u201d she said at her home in early October.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moore \u2014 who has been working since she was 15 years old and took a break when she was pregnant with her daughter<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2014<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>doesn\u2019t have reliable transportation to get to a job, although she\u2019s been applying for work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had to drop out of high school<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>because she had to work to provide for her family while her mom was sick with heart and kidney failure. That\u2019s when she said her childhood ended. Stigma associated with welfare and public assistance<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9127679\/#:~:text=The%20stigmatizing%20nature%20of%20the%20U.S.%20welfare%20system%20is%20of,several%20adverse%20mental%20health%20outcomes\">&nbsp;has been linked to poor health, especially among Black and Hispanic mothers.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are no restrictions on how moms spend their money, we are empowering and trusting families to make decisions that best fit their needs,\u201d Dr. Mona Hanna, director of Rx Kids and associate dean of public health at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2024\/08\/28\/cash-program-for-moms-with-babies-to-launch-in-kalamazoo-next-year\/74957553007\/\">earlier this year<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rx Kids leaders distinguish it from universal basic income,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/basicincome.stanford.edu\/about\/what-is-ubi\/\">recurring cash payments that are not targeted<\/a>, and guaranteed income, which provide no-strings-attached cash payments that are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/guaranteedincome.us\/about\">often geared toward people with the greatest needs.<\/a>&nbsp;Instead it\u2019s a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/emergencies\/humanitarian-cash-transfers-explained\">child cash transfer<\/a>&nbsp;program, Hanna said, built on evidence from other countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moms in Flint, where the program&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poverty.umich.edu\/2024\/01\/10\/enrollment-open-flint-makes-history-with-launch-of-rx-kids\/\">first launched in January,<\/a>&nbsp;spend their \u201ccash prescriptions\u201d \u2014 a $1,500 lump sum during pregnancy and then $500 a month for the first year of the infant\u2019s life \u2014 on baby supplies, food, rent, utilities and transportation, Hanna said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rx Kids received a $20 million state budget allocation, from the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, to expand beyond Flint to Kalamazoo and communities in Wayne County and the eastern Upper Peninsula. The Kalamazoo Rx Kids program, announced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2024\/08\/28\/cash-program-for-moms-with-babies-to-launch-in-kalamazoo-next-year\/74957553007\/\">earlier this year<\/a>, is slated to launch in early 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programs in both Flint and Kalamazoo rely on a combination of public and philanthropic dollars, from funders like the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Stryker Johnston Foundation and the Kalamazoo Community Foundation. Rx Kids does not have income requirements and needs philanthropic funds to make it available to moms, in areas it is slated to launch, regardless of their income, program leaders have said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2024\/08\/28\/cash-program-for-moms-with-babies-to-launch-in-kalamazoo-next-year\/74957553007\/\">Kalamazoo version<\/a>&nbsp;is designed to help 840 babies, covering the more than 800 expected to be born in 2025 in the city. About 28% of people in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/profile\/Kalamazoo_city,_Michigan?g=160XX00US2642160#income-and-poverty\">Kalamazoo<\/a>&nbsp;under 18 are living below poverty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rx Kids is raising money to launch the program in other parts of the state. So far, organizers have garnered nearly $4 million for a program in the eastern Upper Peninsula (including Alger, Chippewa, Luce, Mackinac and Schoolcraft) and need another $2 million a year. Communities in Wayne County are also expected to be a part of Rx Kids. Dearborn, for instance, needs $8 million a year for the full version of the program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding comes from a combination of philanthropic, federal and corporate dollars, Hanna said. The $500 a month is a relief as her family relies on only her husband\u2019s income and weathers inflation and unexpected bills, she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last fall, Gordon\u2019s family moved from Florida to Michigan \u2014 where her husband is from \u2014 because housing had become unaffordable. Their rent in Bradenton, Florida, jumped from $1,100 to nearly $2,000 in almost three years. They ended up buying a home in Flint with their savings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gordon found out she was pregnant around the time they moved. She was going to look for a new job but delayed the search after she learned she was expecting. Gordon\u2019s pregnancy was high risk. She frequently threw up and lost more than 10 pounds in her first trimester. In the second trimester, Gordon was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also a financially challenging time, going from two incomes, down to one. Her family declared bankruptcy in January and downsized from two cars to one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a prenatal visit, a nurse gave Gordon a flier about Rx Kids. At first, she didn\u2019t believe it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was like, well, if this is true, it will help us a lot. Because we start from \u2026 scratch for the baby. We don\u2019t have anything for the baby,\u201d Gordon, 37, said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She received $1,500 in February. After her baby\u2019s birth in May, Gordon began receiving the $500 monthly cash allowance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can really notice a difference,\u201d she said. \u201cWithout the $500 extra that we get a month, we might go really behind on even utility bills. (Credit: Ryan Garza, Detroit Free Press)\n                            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is the Flint program helping families across the city?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Flint, Rx Kids has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rxkids.org\/impact\/\">distributed<\/a>&nbsp;about $5 million to nearly 1,300 families, as of Dec. 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early findings from a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rxkids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/RxKids_Research_Brief.pdf\">survey<\/a>&nbsp;of more than 112 program participants found that 70% earned less than $10,000 annually and 72% reported that the cash in hand helped improve their own health and the health of their babies. Eighty percent of participants said the money helped them become confident parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rxkids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/RxKids_Research_Brief.pdf\">survey<\/a>&nbsp;of Flint and non-Flint moms before and after Rx Kids began looked at maternal wellbeing and financial security for families. More than 1,000 mothers who gave birth at Hurley Medical Center between July 2023 through June 2024 completed the survey. It found that Rx Kids-eligible Flint families from this year were more likely to report having enough of the food they wanted compared to Flint families in 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the low-income participants in Rx Kids reported being evicted since childbirth, compared to other groups, according to the survey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These preliminary findings matter because 59% of people under 18 live below poverty in Flint,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table\/ACSST1Y2023.S1701?g=160XX00US2629000\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to 2023 American Community Survey data.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/table\/ACSST1Y2023.S1701?q=michigan%20poverty&amp;g=060XX00US2604929000_160XX00US2642160\">In Michigan<\/a>, it\u2019s 18%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedforalice.org\/county-reports\/michigan\">Sixty-six percent<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>of Flint households<\/a>&nbsp;in 2022 fell below the United Way\u2019s ALICE threshold, which includes people living in poverty and families earning more than the federal poverty level, but who still don\u2019t make enough to afford the basics where they reside.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expenses only grow for families when a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/blog\/2017\/01\/13\/cost-raising-child\">child comes into the picture<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe cost of having a baby adds up, and income plunges right before babies are born. (Credit: Ryan Garza, Detroit Free Press)\n                            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018A step up\u2019&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle Howard is among the most recent participants in the Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust program,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>using the extra cash to buy a car, beds for her children<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>and furniture for her apartment at Commonwealth Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Howard\u2019s costs essentially outstripped the monthly income she brought in as she juggled tutoring and afterschool programs for her sons,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>rent payments,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>groceries, utilities and car insurance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extra money helped her spend more time with her kids \u2014 talking to them and preparing healthy meals instead of eating on the go \u2014 because she was able to quit one of her jobs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was able to save money for her sons\u2019 college education and for a home down the line \u2014 something she wouldn\u2019t have been able to do otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a crutch,\u201d Howard, 36, said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a step up.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homeownership is a goal she shares with Washington, the former Magnolia Mother\u2019s Trust mom.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>As Washington builds up her credit,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>she wants to eventually buy a house and have enough space for a dog for her children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always wanted to sit down on my back porch and watch my kids play in the backyard,\u201d she said in her apartment in early October. \u201cI\u2019m gonna get that. That\u2019s what I\u2019m working towards doing.
