{"id":232,"date":"2025-03-14T15:23:17","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T19:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/uncategorized\/u-m-grand-valley-targeted-civil-rights-probes-trump-administration\/"},"modified":"2025-05-15T16:31:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T20:31:26","slug":"u-m-grand-valley-targeted-civil-rights-probes-trump-administration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/u-m-grand-valley-targeted-civil-rights-probes-trump-administration\/","title":{"rendered":"U-M, Grand Valley targeted for civil rights probes by Trump administration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>The US Department of Education is investigating the University of Michigan and Grand Valley State University for alleged actions the feds say could go against federal antidiscrimination rules\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>University of Michigan is under investigation for its connection with a program that aims to diversify business professionals<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Grand Valley State University is under investigation for 11 scholarships\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Department of Education is investigating the University of Michigan and Grand Valley State University for what it calls \u201cracial preferences\u201d in academic opportunities or scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigations could potentially lead to loss of federal funding, which could amount to millions of dollars or more at the two Michigan public universities, and mark an escalation of a war the administration of President Donald Trump is waging on diversity efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The schools are among 51 universities and colleges that are under Department of Education investigation<b> <\/b>nationwide, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/office-civil-rights-initiates-title-vi-investigations-institutions-of-higher-education-0\">Friday announcement<\/a>, ranging from prestigious institutions like Yale University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to regional schools<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U-M is one of 45 schools across the country being investigated by participation in <a href=\"https:\/\/phdproject.org\/about-us\/\">The PhD Project<\/a>, a national organization founded in 1994 as a means to help diversify the pool of business professionals, including academic faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/trump-admin-university-michigan-stop-antisemitism-or-face-enforcement\"><strong>Trump admin to University of Michigan: Stop antisemitism, or face \u2018enforcement\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/how-michigan-may-be-impacted-trump-plan-gut-department-education\"><strong>How Michigan may be impacted by Trump plan to gut Department of Education<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/facing-deadline-end-dei-michigan-schools-ask-crucial-question-what-dei\"><strong>Facing deadline to end DEI, Michigan schools ask crucial question: What is DEI?<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Grand Valley is one of six schools being investigated for what the education department calls race-based scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The schools are being investigated under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in education programs and activities receiving federal funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s announcement expands our efforts to ensure universities are not discriminating against their students based on race and race stereotypes,\u201d US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement Friday. \u201cStudents must be assessed according to merit and accomplishment, not prejudged by the color of their skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t immediately clear the scope of potential federal funding losses or how the investigations would be pursued. Research universities like U-M receive hundreds of millions of federal grant dollars annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Michigan did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grand Valley said it\u2019s under investigation for 11 scholarships available to students there. The school did not specify which scholarships or many students receive those scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are reviewing this communication and will respond as appropriate,\u201d Grand Valley said in a statement. \u201cGrand Valley State University is committed to maintaining an inclusive environment while complying with all applicable laws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal announcement comes one month after the department sent a letter to schools across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/michigan-standing-dei-schools-despite-trump-threat-pull-us-funding\">country warning they could risk federal funding<\/a> if they do not follow antidiscrimination law. The \u201cDear Colleague Letter\u201d sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgemi.com\/talent-education\/facing-deadline-end-dei-michigan-schools-ask-crucial-question-what-dei\">confusion among education leaders<\/a> and the Trump administration later released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-releases-frequently-asked-questions-dear-colleague-letter-about-racial-preferencing?utm_source=Bridge+Michigan&amp;utm_campaign=5ff41632e7-Education+Watch+03%2F05%2F25&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_c64a28dd5a-5ff41632e7-82730912\">frequently asked questions document<\/a> clarifying its stance on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t clear how U-M, Grand Valley and the other 49 institutions were singled out. Less than half of the 108 universities listed on The PhD Project website as participants were placed under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A request for comment to the federal education department was not immediately returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to its <a href=\"https:\/\/phdproject.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/PhDProjectFY23Annual_Report.pdf\">2023 annual report<\/a>, The PhD Project \u201cworks to increase diversity in the business world\u201d by offering support for minorities to \u201cpursue business PhDs with the intent to become university faculty, teaching and guiding students who aspire to careers in business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,700 people have participated in the program, with the organization claiming it is responsible for a six-fold increase in \u201chistorically underrepresented professors, administrators, and academic leaders at an extensive list of colleges and universities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among participants, 90% complete their business PhD, compared to the national average of 70%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Trump administration views programs that offer a leg up to historically underserved racial groups as a violation of civil rights.
